Dear Parents

Freedom Day and Workers’ Day:

As we celebrate 30 years of the first democratic elections, I look forward to the vision of one day seeing a Morningside learner being “President” of our beautiful rainbow nation. Let us strive towards creating a better South Africa by giving our children the morals, skills, knowledge, attitude and values, and all this with an exceptionally positive outlook to our stunning land.

Let us also celebrate our workers in South Africa and throughout the world this 2024 Workers’ Day. A reminder that Wednesday, 01 May 2024 is a public holiday. We will see our children back again on Thursday, 02 May 2024.

Ascension Day:

Schools are granted a religious observance holiday where the majority of staff and learners are going to be away from school. The Department of Education HOD has approved our application for school closure on Thursday, 9 May 2024. Please ensure that all learners are back at school for Friday, 10 May 2024.

Badminton Report:

I am extremely proud of the badminton players at Morningside Primary. A few of the badminton players from Mrs Dlamini's Beginners Team are now representing the school in the Badminton league matches, which is usually played by the Advanced players only. Both the teams were extremely eager to play their first league match on Wednesday, 24 April 2024. In every match there are 6 single games and 3 doubles. The A team played Hillcrest Primary (B Team) and we won every game, ending with a score of 9-0. The B team played against Sherwood Primary. They played with such zest and enthusiasm but unfortunately, we lost 8-1. Well done, to both the badminton teams for their efforts and team spirit. I am so proud of you!

Soccer Report:

Morningside Primary U14s fell to Sherwood Primary 4-1 in a hard-fought match on Wednesday. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous scoring chances, Morningside's young squad struggled to find the back of the net, ultimately succumbing to a clinical Sherwood side. With some fine-tuning and an emphasis on finishing, this talented young squad will undoubtedly bounce back from this setback.

Morningside Primary U12 Held to Thrilling Draw by Sherwood Primary…

Morningside Primary U12 and Sherwood Primary played out a pulsating 1-1 draw in a highly entertaining match on Wednesday. In a game that swung both ways, Morningside's young stars were denied a hard-fought win by a late Sherwood equalizer.

Most of our Under 10’s are playing in “11 a side” football games for the first time. The off-side rule becoming a difficult concept to understand while in movement. Morningside won their match against Livingstone and Sycamore, confidently and stamped their presence as a team in the making. We hosted Sherwood Under 10’s and after a tight game came away down by 2 goals. We went back to the drawing board by having a training session on our Freedom Day holiday.

Under 7 and Under 8 Soccer:

There will be an extra soccer training session for learners born in 2016 and 2017 on Workers’ Day (Wednesday, 01 May 2024) at 8 a.m. sharp and finishing at 10 a.m. Indemnity forms will need to be filled in if attending.

Interschool Swimming Gala:

Morningside Primary hosted an interschool gala on Friday, the 19th of April 2024. Our learners competed against Livingstone, Gordon Road Girls and Glenmore Primary. Gordon Road Girls won the girls’ division pushing Livingstone into second position by just one point. Morningside won the boys’ division. They had also taken the Ladder Relay race with a convincing victory. Congratulations boys!

Thank you to Mrs Laurence for her dedication to the code and endeavouring to turn our swimming around. Mrs Mahabeer has also graciously volunteered her time with her incredible knowledge making a huge difference… Thank you!

Thank you to Mrs Korte, Mr Singh and Mr Veress for ensuring that the event was a success.

Book Character Day:

Learners were given the task of dressing up as their favourite book character on Tuesday, the 23rd of April 2024… and “Oh boy!” “Did learners turn up with spectacular outfits.”

This was a free civvies day in which we aimed to promote reading. We wanted to see who can make up an outfit that is creative by using recyclables.

Literature Quiz:

On Wednesday 24 April, 5 learners attended the Kids Lit Quiz at Chelsea Preparatory in which 15 schools participated. Zoe Van Zyl, Anna Damonse, Thavina Padayachee, Ayabulela Thangase and Bianca Jooste acquitted themselves well, but unfortunately, we're not placed among the top three. Everyone enjoyed themselves and participated full heartedly. Another quiz will be held next term at Westville Senior Primary.

Astro Quiz 2024

On 11 April 2024, 16 children participated individually in the first round of Astro Quiz 2024. The top eight learners will proceed to Round Two, to be written online in groups of 4 on Thursday, 16 May 2024. We wish them all the best as they study the information on the Astro Quiz website in preparation for this event.
